Met een goed gevoel dendert Festival deBeschaving af op een veelbelovende nieuwe editie. Zaterdag 30 juni is het zover, het meest eigenwijze festival van Nederland gaat voor een ultiem vervolg! Met 5 podia en meer dan 60 acts is deBeschaving er klaar voor!
Summer Darkness vindt dit jaar plaats van 27 t/m 29 juli op diverse locaties in Utrecht. We blikken vooruit en stellen alle bands voor die zullen optreden op de tiende editie van het dark underground festival dat de Domstad ook dit jaar weer zwart zal kleuren.
De organisatie van Culemborg Blues heeft de laatste namen bekend gemaakt van de bands die zaterdag 25 augustus 2012 op Culemborg Blues zullen spelen. Aan de voet van het middeleeuwse stadhuis staat het hoofdpodium, waar om 14.00 uur het muzikale programma start.
Na de massaal bezochte jubileumeditie van 2011, wordt het weer tijd voor de 31e editie van Werfpop, het grootste gratis festival van de Leidse regio. Het festival zal dit jaar op zondag 8 juli 2012 plaatsvinden in de Leidse Hout te Leiden.
Donderdag stond Guitar Wolf uit Japan in dB’s. De drie punk rock’n’rollers gehuld in zwarte leren jacks en zonnebrillen gingen te keer als een uitbarstende vulkaan. De Utrechtse Stilettos fungeerden als het voorprogramma.
Per Hoogendoorn staat in Utrecht bekend als drummer van onder meer Hymir, Primer en RUA. Afgelopen vrijdag sloot hij zijn studie aan het Rotterdamse Conservatorium Codarts af met een eindexamenconcert in Starsound Studio.
Het concert van Delain stond aanvankelijk eind april gepland. Door de uitgestelde release van “We Are The Others” werd het verschoven naar 7 juni. Eindelijk is het dan zo ver dat het nieuwe album live aan de fans wordt voorgeschoteld.
Guy Corneille heeft de jury van De Utrecht Popprijs 2012 op donderdag 7 juni in Tivoli de Helling weten te overtuigen met hun performance, songs en potentie. Guy Corneille ging dus met de winst aan de haal. My Blue Van is door het publiek gekozen als winnaar van de publieksprijs.
Na de vrijdag met veel gitaargeweld is op zaterdag de 2e en afsluitende dag van het Highlands Festival. Ondanks eerdere minder gunstige weersvoorspellingen gaat het een zonnige dag worden met opnieuw een flinke portie blues en rock.
Het Highlands Festival is een vrij jong festival. Dit jaar is de vierde editie. Dit muziek feest is speciaal voor de vele fans van blues en rock. Het Highlands Festival probeert bezoekers te verrassen met internationals top acts, maar ook nationaal talent.
De slogan van het Highlands Festival in Amersfoort is “Blues with a bite”. In dit laatste fotoverslag zijn we weer bij de Main Stage. Wij zien hier op zaterdag Lefthand Freddy, Jon Amor, Zakiya Hooker, Wishbone Ash, Aynsley Lister en Mothers Finest.
Rock en blues vormden de hoofdmoot op het Highlands Festival in Amersfoort. Goed weer, een uitstekende sfeer en sterke bands zorgen voor een succesvolle editie. Op zaterdag zien we Khalif Wailin’ Walter, Vdelli, The Veldman Brothers, Ryan McGarvey en Ian Parker op de Segafredo Stage.
Het Highlands Festival in Amersfoort was afgelopen weekend aan zijn vierde editie toe. In ons tweede fotoverslag gaan we naar de Main Stage op vrijdagavond. Démira Jansen, Oli Brown Band, Julian Sas en Uriah Heep waren op dit podium te bewonderen.
Afgelopen weekend was voor de vierde keer het Highlands Festival in Amersfoort. Blues en rock ontmoetten elkaar in Stadspark Schothorst. In dit eerste fotoverslag is de Segafredo Stage met King Of The World, Danny Bryant en Ian Siegal op de vrijdagavond aan de beurt.
Summer Darkness maakt naast nieuwe acts ook de dagindeling van het programma tot nu toe bekend. De tiende editie van het dark underground festival vindt dit jaar plaats van 27 t/m 29 juli op diverse locaties in Utrecht. Nog meer nieuwe namen…
De laatste zondag van juni is traditioneel de Harley Customdag van de Harley Davidson Club in Utrecht oftewel HDC Utreg. Plaats van handeling is het Clubhuis aan de Rotsoord. Er zijn live optredens van Chaoz en Black Top.
Het wordt een spannende finale van De Utrecht Popprijs op donderdag 7 juni 2012 in Tivoli de Helling. Op deze avond zullen de vier finalisten (For The Birds, My Blue Van, Guy Corneille en Aumffie) voor een vakkundige jury en het publiek laten zien waarom juist zij de besten zijn.
Op aangeven van publiek en bezoekers heeft het Utrechtse festival deBeschaving per direct de ticketprijs met €15,00 verlaagd; van €37,50 naar €22,50. Tevens maakt de organisatie bekend dat ook Blood Red Shoes, Will and The People en Mala Vita aan het programma zijn toegevoegd.
Piraten, matrozen en havenzangers, iedereen kijkt zijn ogen uit in Willems Wondere Wereldhaven. Op zaterdag 7 juli is iedereen uitgenodigd om vanaf 14:00 aan te meren in Amersfoort Vathorst-Noord om dit spektakel met eigen ogen te aanschouwen!
Zaterdag was het weer eens tijd voor een ouderwets ruig avondje thrashmetal in dB’s. De Belgische thrash sensatie Bliksem is de headliner. Maar ook de lokale metal bands Black Silence en Stronghold beuken er als support-act genadeloos op los.
Zaterdag 19 mei waren de halve finales van de Utrecht Popprijs. In ACU zagen wij in de tweede heat drie bands stevig te keer gaan. Spark To Fire, Rolla en Silver proberen hier de juryleden te overtuigen van hun kunnen en hopen op een plek in de finale.

Op zaterdag 9 juni vindt Amersfoorts popfestival Torenpop plaats. Tussen 13.30 en 01.00 kun je genieten van grote nationale namen op de twee buitenpodia. Stadsgeluid is op vrijdagavond 8 juni. Het programma van beide Amersfoortse festivals is bekend.
Afgelopen zaterdag stond in de Peppel een avondje garage rock’n’roll met John Coffey, E.T. Explore Me en Shaking Godspeed op het programma. Dat ging zoals dat hoort gepaard met de nodige decibellen, zweetdruppels en veel bier.
Het is bijna zover, De Utrecht Popprijs 2012 gaat over ruim een week van start. Volgende week zaterdag 19 mei zullen 11 talentvolle bands uit de provincie Utrecht in de halve finale strijden om een plek in de finale van De Utrecht Popprijs.
Ieder jaar wordt in het hele land op 5 mei de bevrijding van Nederland tijdens de 2e wereldoorlog gevierd. Het is een traditie om dit in alle provincies te doen met grote festivals. Ook in Utrecht is dit inmiddels een vertrouwd beeld.
In ons 1e Bevrijdingsfestival fotoverslag kijken we naar het Rabo Vrijheidspodium. Op dit hoofdpodium komen de grote namen aan bod. Wij zien daarvan The Computers, Ali B Op Volle Toeren, Blaudzun, The Answer en Katzenjammer.
In ons 2e Bevrijdingsfestival fotoverslag is de blik gericht op het Sena Talent Stage. Het podium voor opkomende en talentvolle bands uit de regio. Wij zien hier The Brave, Minus The Tiger, Bart Constant, Yori Swart en Wooden Saints optreden.
Koninginnedag betekent 24 uur lang feest in Utrecht. Het begint om 18 uur op de voorafgaande avond en gaat een etmaal lang door. Het is droog en niet echt koud. Vooraf staat dat garant voor een massaal bezocht feest in de Utrechtse binnenstad.
Ruim een week geleden speelde de Utrechtse metalband Martyr als voorprogramma van de christian rock formatie RED in een afgeladen Tivoli de Helling. Zaterdag moesten ze het met beduidend minder publiek doen in Azotod in De Meern.
Zaterdag 21 maart was de finale van het Geheim van Starsound. Spool, Juicy Jones, Whitley & The Hot Males, Jimmy Dee, Nona, Square Attic gingen strijden voor de winst in deze bandwedstrijd. De jury roept Square Attic uit tot winnaar.
Na tien voorrondes en twee halve finales was het Geheim van Starsound op zaterdag 21 april toe aan de finale. In de volle Starsound Studio op het Kanaleneiland namen SpooL, Juicy Jones, Whitley & The Hot Males, Jimmy Dee, NONA en Square Attic het tegen elkaar op.
Op 5 mei staan we stil bij de betekenis van vrijheid en wordt deze vrijheid gevierd op de diverse bevrijdingsfestivals in Nederland. In Park Transwijk vindt het Bevrijdingsfestival Utrecht plaats. Het complete programma is bekend.
Dinsdagavond opende de Amerikaanse christian rockband RED in een uitverkocht Tivoli de Helling hun eerste Europese tournee. De Utrechtse heavy metal veteranen Martyr verzorgden voor de bomvolle zaal het voorprogramma.

Geen valse beloftes, een blik op de line-up zegt namelijk genoeg. Onlangs nog glorieus aanwezig op Pinkpop is er bijvoorbeeld de meeslepende rock van Blood Red Shoes. Ook van de partij in Landgraaf waren de schooiers van Will And The People, momenteel een dikke hit scorend met “Lion In The Morning Sun”, maar ook garant staand voor een zomers feestje, zo bleek, Festival deBeschaving gaat het meemaken. Dan is er nog de folktronica van Alt-J, op dit moment misschien wel de band waar de meeste buzz omheen hangt, diep doordachte, alternatieve pop oftewel ideaal festivalvoer. Als muzikaal tegenwicht staat vervolgens ook het uit Hollywood afkomstige Vintage Trouble op het affiche, een band die juist extraverte, soulvolle rock laat horen. Momenteel tourend met Lenny Kravitz, zaterdag 30 juni maken ze acte de présence in de Botanische Tuinen.
Festival als ontdekkingstocht
Nergens zo’n extravagant programma als op Festival deBeschaving. Theater en dans maar ook medische weetjes en wetenschappelijke experimenten. Zo kun je een koekje te eten krijgen, en ben je vervolgens een paar uur via GPS te volgen. Dan blijkt dat je bij schrijver Herman Brusselmans hebt gehangen, vervolgens bij het wetenschappodium deBestuiving hebt geluisterd naar lezingen van Paulien Cornelisse en filosoof Bas Haring, om daarna een dansje te doen bij de Amsterdamse dubstep-dj Gomes.
Festival deBeschaving is een ontdekkingstocht. Geen rechtlijnig dagje uit, maar fijnzinnig vertier tegenover onvervalst vermaak. Mooie gitaarmuziek van Case Mayfield versus de uitzinnige sounds van Slagsmålsklubben. Of de hitgevoelige popsongs van Zulu Winter versus de 8bit dance van EINDBAAS. Om tussendoor je DNA te checken, portret vast te leggen en je danskwaliteiten te testen.
Met 5 podia en meer dan 60 acts is de meest opvallende speler in het Nederlandse festivalseizoen er simpelweg klaar voor!

In 2009 knalde schijnbaar vanuit het niets Owl City in bijna de hele westerse wereld naar nummer 1 met de onweerstaanbare pophit Fireflies. Schijnbaar, want Owl City (een project van de Amerikaanse multi-instrumentalist Adam Young) had toen al twee cd’s uitgebracht en met zijn optimistische indietronica een uitgebreide following op MySpace gegenereerd.
Deze zomer verschijnt het vierde album van Owl City, volgens Young een veelzijdige plaat met Nederlandse inspiratiebronnen als Tiësto en Armin van Buuren, maar ook rockinvloeden (een gastrol van Blink-182-zanger Mark Hoppus). Spannend!

De Zweedse deathmetalband Amon Amarth bestaat twintig jaar en viert dat met vijf concerten in Duitsland, Polen en Nederland. De muziek van Amon Amarth is meer metal dan death, want hoewel de zanger zich de keel uit zijn lijf grunt, zitten er opvallend veel fraaie melodieën in het gitaarwerk verweven.
Ook tekstueel is Amon Amarth boeiend: songschrijver Johan Hegg grijpt graag terug naar de Noorse mythologie en Vikingtijd. Een speciale gelegenheid vraagt om een speciaal concert, en daarom spelen de Vikingrockers twee sets met het beste uit hun carrière. Na afloop is er een meet & greet!
De organisatie van Culemborg Blues heeft de laatste namen bekend gemaakt van de bands die zaterdag 25 augustus 2012 op Culemborg Blues zullen spelen. Opvallende namen onder de nieuw bekend gemaakte bands zijn Krissy Matthews (UK) en Scarlet Mae. Met Krissy Matthews heeft Culemborg Blues een enorm talent weten te strikken. Kenners verwachten dat het een grote ster in wording is. Krissy Matthews geeft een solo optreden tijdens Culemborg Blues. De roots van leden van de Scarlet Mae liggen in Culemborg zelf, waarmee het de organisatie wederom gelukt is om invulling te geven aan de binding met de stad en regio.

Summer Darkness begon in 2003 als een dark underground muziek festival en is in de afgelopen tien jaar uitgegroeid tot een interdisciplinair dark underground lifestyle festival. Altijd spraakmakend, fotogeniek en vooral volstrekt eigenzinnig weet Summer Darkness een breed nationaal en internationaal publiek te binden en boeien.
Medusa’s Bal du Masque is de openingsavond van Summer Darkness met een fantastisch gemaskerd bal. Headliners van deze jubileum editie zijn: Combichrist, Suicide Commando (die 2 speciale sets spelen) en mede-oprichter van Joy Division Peter Hook brengt Closer. A CHALLENGE OF HONOUR
A Challenge of Honour is a Dutch project by Peter Savelkoul, that is generally filed under martial industrial. But the music is much broader than the boundaries of that subgenre dictate. Although his performances are limited in numbers, he played in many different countries including Germany, Russia and Finland. At Summer Darkness, A Challenge of Honour will play their last concert, to celebrate the release of his final album in October 2012. Roger van der Putten (guitar) and Irvin Getrouw (percussion) will perform alongside Savelkoul for this special occasion.
AESTHETIC PERFECTION
You don’t get your EBM more industrial than this. Or your electro/industrial more EBM, which ever you prefer. Aesthetic Perfection perfectly balances between the melodic and the harshness within the electronic genres. These guys know the devil’s in the details. Their dark electro approach has been winning them more and more aficionados over the years, and we don’t see that trend stopping for a long time.
AGENT SIDE GRINDER
It is impossible to listen to Agent Side Grinder from Sweden and not think of Joy Division and early industrial bands like Suicide. But their blend of industrial sounds played in post-punk style is mixed with old school EBM and electro to become something completely of its own. Since their beginning in 2008, singer Kristoffer Grip has added his feverish vocals to this apocalyptic cocktail that will be served to you during this 10th edition of Summer Darkness.
AXIOME
Axiome from Belgium has been releasing albums on the German experimental/ambient/industrial label Ant-Zen since 1999. Since then this duo has recorded records in various genres such as electro-industrial, minimal experimental and breakcore. Their relaxed combination of elements of rhythm, industrial, breakcore and noise into something that is not overtly dramatic sets them apart from the crowd.
BINARY PARK
Futurepop mixed with EBM and a bit of industrial to create intelligent sci-fi dark electro. A fresh take on electronic music by this UK / German collaboration. Their new album “Worlds Collide” was, just like their debut, released by Metropolis Records (home of And One, Front 242, Haujobb and many many other big names in the dark underground), so that should tell you a lot about the quality of their music.
CAMERATA MEDIOLANENSE
Camerata Mediolanense from Milan (It) have been enchanting an ever-growing fanbase with their unique mix of ancient music and electronics. Known for their high quality output and their attention to detail it is not uncommon for fans of this group to travel across countries to get to see Camerata Mediolanense play live. And as they haven’t played in The Netherlands for a while, this concert could be described already as being special. But what will make it even more of a must-be event is that this concert at Summer Darkness 10th anniversary will take place in the beautiful Leeuwenbergh church.
COMBICHRIST
There’s no denying the rise and rise of Combichrist (NO/USA). Its electro-industrial has ripped dance floors all over the world. Last year Combichrist performed at a sold out show at Tivoli Oudergracht and to top it off they toured with tanz metal juggernaut Rammstein. As Combichrist is preparing to rise above the underground into new territories, it can be regarded as one of the biggest acts of the dark underground at the moment. Don’t be fooled by this popularity, this is everything but mainstream music. Pure energy forged into electro-industrial madness, ‘this shit will fuck you up’.
CONTROLLED COLLAPSE
Controlled Collapse played Summer Darkness in 2005, when the only song most people knew was “Guidance”, a dance floor hit remixed by X-Fusion. Now he’s returned all the way from Poland to demonstrate why his name gets around more and more, as is his music. Insiders know where they should be.
DAVIDK
As organiser of STORM, it is no surprise that DavidK’s dj-sets are a crossover between noise/industrial and hardcore/tekno. Focussing mostly on the 140-160 bpm range, DavidK also plays on other parties like The Hagues’ Machinery and the Amsterdam based party Intona Rumori. This STORM, DavidK will spin what he’s best at: pounding noise and harsh industrial hardcore.
DEMANUFACTURER
Demanufacturer is an Industrial hardcore producer from The Hague, the Netherlands. His music is mostly inspired by movies, video games and old cartoons. Next to industrial hardcore he is also experimenting with Cyber, Noise and Dark Ambient. In his DJ sets he also tries to combine these genres. Demanufacturer got quite some DJ support from artists such as DavidK (STORM), Mental Wreckage, Stefan ZMK and The Dj Producer. He did a remix for Iszoloscope on the legendary industrial label Ant-Zen and his track POW! was released on Hard Kryptic Records and featured on the Hardcore Top 100 2011 CD. Soon Demanufacturer will have new releases on Abraxis Productions and Industrial Propaganda Recordings. Next to his dj and producing activities Demanufacturer is also the organizer of The Hague’s industrial party `Machinery´. Check his Industrial Mayhem out on STORM!
DIARY OF DREAMS
Since its inception, Diary of Dreams has been regarded as a leading act within the darkwave scene. With its distinctive dystopian sound it has captured the ears of thousands looking for something more than just dance music. Harsh at times, but never without feeling, this show will focus on the latest release ‘ego:X’, without sacrificing the classics.

Some say writing about music is like dancing about architecture. But if music could be like architecture, it would be the music of Empusae. Elaborate ritualistic and industrial soundscapes with intricate structures are what this solo project of Nicolas van Meirhaege is all about. On his latest album he worked together with among others In Slaughter Native, Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, Arcana and others to create imminent structures of rhythm, ambience and atmosphere. In some songs it’s almost as if your listening to memory itself.
FAERYDAE
Faerydae are going to keep the good spirits going on the Domplein on Saturday. Their name translates into ‘the gift of faeries’, that’s why we think they should start their own brand of absinthe as well. They give folk their own twist, with many eastern rhythms and balkan and celtic influences. This pack of artists is eager to share their musical gifts with as big an audience as they can get. And at the Domplein, that shouldn’t be a problem.
FINVARRA
Finvarra infuse their own stew of Celtic folk with some spicy oriental elements. These four troubadours are not afraid to experiment with elements heard in other styles. Don’t be afraid if you hear a couple of tones or instruments you don’t instantly recognize, because as an old Dutch saying goes: “Variety is the spice of life.”
FORMALIN
If you’ve been to any relevant electro/industrial party lately you’ve heard at least two songs by Formalin frequently. Their tracks ‘Yuppiescum’ and ‘My Fetish’ have been setting dance floors on fire across Europe as quickly as the hottest internet memes spread. Summer Darkness is the only place in the Netherlands where you can hear them play live this year. Let us call this what it is: this is Berlin city industrial.
HAUJOBB
After 15 years, German experimental electro pioneers Haujobb will fuel the Dutch dance floor once again. Known for their technical precision, these renegades of noise are always busy crafting their bleak vision into innovative music. To celebrate the release of ‘New World March’, the first album in eight years, Haujobb will perform their only show in The Netherlands at Summer Darkness.
IN THE NURSERY
With bombastic and visually beautiful performances, In The Nursery (UK) has stolen the hearts, minds and ears of those who witnessed them perform live. It’s been a while for ITN to perform in the Netherlands, and now it gloriously returns with an exclusive show at Summer Darkness. Its new wave / neoclassical style is hard to put into specific genres or words. This is more than just a concert, In The Nursery is an experience.
INCUBITE
Incubite’s track “Glowstix, Neon and Blood” have been on playlists of German and international clubs alike since its debut in February 2011. Their first album ‘Toxicum’ pushed the band into the focus of the scene. Through touring and playing support shows for bands like Combichrist and Agonoize, they built a reputation with a live show filled with hard TBM, bone crushing guitars and distinctive vocals. In November they will release their second album ‘Riot Trigger’ of which they already play new songs on this year’s Summer Darkness.
KISS THE ANUS OF A BLACK CAT
This Belgian new wave band started out as an apocalyptic folk-act three albums ago. But bandleader Stef Irritant decided he was done with the folk part and started writing songs not only with a guitar but with a synthesizer as well. This resulted in a dark and danceable form of new wave, in which the drum machine takes a prominent spot next to Irritant’s deep voice. His latest album ‘Weltuntergangsstimmung’ has the same gloominess of his older records, but this time you can dance towards the end of the world.
MARS
Playing true apocalyptic folk from Germany, MARS is a side-project of the ritual-folk/ambient act :Golgatha: that played at Summer Darkness in 2009. They ended that performance with a beautiful stripped-down version of the neofolk classic ‘Death of the West’. With MARS that acoustic approach has become the heart of the music. Their honest acoustic folk about cultural decline not only delivers melancholy in their melodies but will give food for thought as well.
MICHEL BANABILA
Michel Banabila gets his inspiration from all kinds of music, be it jazz, ambient electronics or ethnic music of all kinds. He uses all these different forms of input in his industrial soundscapes filled with ghostly voices. This creates a dreamlike sound that is neither familiar nor strange but always compelling. Therefor it’s not strange at all that he creates musical scores for film, television, choreographies and theatre plays.
MOJO FURY
Northern Ireland is not particularly known for their musical output. Mojo Fury are trying to break this law (along with for instance And So I Watched You From Afar), with their own brand of alternative electro-infused rock. Think Nine Inch Nails or Battles at their rockiest. At Summer Darkness you can see Mojo Fury before the hipster indiekids catch up on this.
MONO AMINE
Heavy rhythmic industrial that keeps on exploring the edges of genres like noisecore and industrial tekno. That’s what you get when Mono Amine (NL) is the first to get behind the control panel at our industrial night on Friday. His energetic live performance will kick of this night like it’s supposed to be: full-throttle. He’s always trying to find new ways to surprise the audience by giving them what they didn’t even realize they needed. Straight in your face dance music.
MONOLITH
Monolith is a solo project of the Belgian electronic music artist & producer Eric Van Wonterghem, also known from his work with acts like Klinik, Sonar and Insekt. With Monolith he has been demonstrating since 1997 that he’s not afraid of experimenting which resulted in a sound that mixes ritual rhythms, dark ambient, industrial and EBM sounds. At Summer Darkness he will present his latest album ‘The Inner Core’, of which you probably know club hit Terror Disco from dance floors all over the globe.
NACHTMAHR
As many of you have been here and at Cyberia before, you know that Nachtmahr (a project of Thomas Rainer, also part of L’Âme Immortelle) always bring their a-game to Utrecht. Their elaborate live shows including live drums and beautiful dancers guarantee a visual spectacle that matches their audio output. As human as they are visible on stage, so inhuman is their sound. With numerous hits in the international industrial underground, you’re bound to hear some familiar club hits at this exclusive show in the Netherlands. Dark industrial techno to match their name: nightmare.
NAO
As we traveled throughout Europe finding the best bands for our festival, we came across the electronic rock band Näo. In our humble opinion one of the best acts at last year’s Maschinenfest. And when you can shine on an industrial music event that big, we’re confident that Näo will blow away the audience at Summer Darkness as well. These Frenchmen blend abstract idm and industrial with post-rock and heavy guitars creating intricate songs. Brought to you exclusively in the Netherlands by your faithful SD-team, Näo will present their self titled album at Summer Darkness.
O. CHILDREN
O. Children got their name of a Nick Cave song, and anyone who hears the voice of singer Tobi O’Kandi will get the link. The skyrocketing O. Children get new fans everyday with their melancholic songs with enough drama and atmosphere to drag down even a clown into despair and desperation. Here dark goth rock meets post punk with synth undertones. Or as The Guardian, an influential British news outlet, wrote in their ‘band of the day’ article about O.Children: “File next to: Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus, the Horrors.” This will be their first Dutch appearance and exclusively at Summer Darkness. And as they’re working on a new album expect some new material as well.
OMKARA TECHICHI
It all began years ago when Omkara Techichi made a name for himself through his releases on Explosive Records (The Future Is Final EP) and Hellbound (The Darkside). Omkara Techichi has the ability to appeal to an extremely wide-ranged audience due to the large variety in styles and uniquely sounding tracks. Despite his great respect and appreciation for Meta4, Omkara decided to leave this label in order to release a gigantic album through a new record label named Noisj, which can be expected within a couple of months.
OPHIDIAN
Ophidian is one of the best Dutch industrial hardcore producers. His signature sound, distorted kicks with pads and uplifting melodies, is immediately recognized by his fans worldwide. Club hits such as “Angel”, “Butterfly” and “Abandon” gave him the opportunity to play on to the biggest stages: Qore, Thunderdome, and tours in the USA and Australia. Due to his dark and epic tracks Ophidian is also popular in the (cyber)goth scene. STORM is really proud to finally have this talented producer and dj in its line up: it will be a dj set to remember!
PARADE GROUND
As we’re celebrating a lot of front runners of Belgian EBM, we thought Parade Ground couldn’t be left out. Parade Ground started as a synth pop / new wave act in the eighties, but never attracted very much attention except of the select few. They collaborated for instance with people like Front 242’s Daniel B. and Wire’s Colin Newman. With this exclusive show in the Netherlands you could become part of this group of insiders that appreciate Parade Ground.
PETER HOOK & The Light – Perform Closer – A Joy Division celebration
He co-founded Joy Division, one of the most influential bands in the dark underground since its inception. After Joy Division renamed itself to New Order he remained in that seminal band until 2007. In 2010 and 2011 he toured very successfully by playing the modern classics of Joy Division. Bass guitars were named after him, and even built out of the wood of The Haçienda, the famous nightclub in Manchester. Of course, we’re talking about Peter Hook. There’s little doubt that most people in the dark underground, or perhaps even the West, will know a song or two that he helped shape. Blue Monday, anyone? Of course we’re extremely proud that we can welcome him at Summer Darkness 2012 for an exclusive show in the Netherlands. At this occasion Peter Hook & The Light will play ‘Closer’, the second full-length Joy Division album that was released in 1980, just after the suicide of singer Ian Curtis.
SIEBEN
Virtuosic violinist Matt Howden will visit Utrecht again as Sieben. His experimental folk music with enchanting melodies never gets too sugarcoated. Some say this is the heir to legendary UK folk ensemble Sol Invictus. All we know is that his playing abilities and composer skills are very hard to match.
SONAR
The seminal project of Dirk Ivens (The Klinik, Absolute Body Control, Dive etc.), will perform an exclusive show in The Netherlands at Summer Darkness. Blending rhythmic industrial with electrifying noise and droning soundscapes, this hypnotic concoction of dance music has made Sonar one of the most biggest acts in the industrial / noise scene. This show will mark the presentation of their new album.
STRAFTANZ
Not only those that have commanded the scene for years get a spot at Summer Darkness, also acts that we see climbing the ranks are given opportunities. Straftanz is an electro band that has seen its star rise from the beginning in 2006. And with their new album ´Mainstream Sellout Overground´ this name will only get bigger and bigger. This show in The Netherlands will undoubtedly contain the club hits you know and those you´re gonna hear for years to come.
SUICIDE COMMANDO
Belgian dark electro powerhouse Suicide Commando celebrates its 25 years of existence with two exclusive shows in The Netherlands at Summer Darkness. On friday Suicide Commando will perform a rare vintage set. On Sunday they will be playing their special best of 25 years set, so be sure to check them out!
We don’t need to tell you what to expect, their reputation precedes Suicide Commando everywhere it performs. Some call this act the ‘gothfather of dark electro’ to stretch the importance of the work. Never taking it easy, Suicide Commando always makes sure to push boundaries. Join this party and prepare for some visual and musical overload.
SURGYN
Surgyn are a duo from Scotland that has been taking the UK by storm since they started performing in 2010. Their ebm/electro has everything you’d need from an act like this, and they do everything right. Ambitious as they are they claim to “surgically reconstruct the face of electronic music.” So if you think electro needs its face redone, you’ll want to be there when Surgyn are performing their operation.
TALVEKOIDIK
Talvekoidik from Germany is a project by Kai (S.K.E.T.) and is all about innovation, finding new ways and taking other paths. The website even states: “Due to causality, on one certain point you have to decide to change the language or turn silent because everything has been said.” This resulted in music that is difficult to label with existing genre descriptions. There’re traced to be found o ambient, glitch, idm and related sounds. Perhaps the best way to describe the music of Talvekoidik is to use the word abstract.
TERROLOKAUST
Terrolokaust is a controversial horde from Spain that takes industrial and EBM and injects that mixture with an overdose of shock rock. During Wave Gotik Treffen this year they showed that they’re not only outspoken in their visual presentation but that they can get bodies moving in a split second. We’re expecting with their performance that they’re going to turn the venue at Summer Darkness into an orchestrated chaos just as easy. With their distorted beats and lyrics about a distorted world Terrolokaust may not be the most subtle band, but who need subtlety anyway?
THE CRUXSHADOWS
Twenty years into existence, and fifteen after the catchy dance floor anthem “Marilyn My Bitterness”, The Cruxshadows are still going strong. Even the theft of equipment at the start of 2010 did not hold them back. These dark electro mainstays from Florida have never strayed far from their signature sound: using violin and guitar in their mix of synth pop and dark electro. The vocals of Rogue are among the most recognizable in the darkwave scene, which says something of the defining impact of The Cruxshadows. True to their motto ‘Live Love Be Believe’ they convey a positive message through their dark music. With this exclusive show in the Netherlands they will once again demonstrate that even the violin can fit perfectly in dark dance music.
THE DUTCH LEMMINGS
Gaelic balfolk from the Netherlands. This contradiction at first glance isn’t actually as strange as it sounds. The Dutch Lemmings will demonstrate that we’re telling the truth. Their jigs and reels are not only traditional, some are brushed up to suit us contemporary folks. These Lemmings follow their own path, but they will happily appear on yours at the Domplein.
THE EXPLODING BOY
This band name reminds us of Tim Burton’s series of sad/funny stories of weird children like Stain Boy or The Boy With Nails In His Eyes. And just as most of Burton’s work is dark but accessible, these four Swedes created a sound that is as poppy as it is goth. Their self-described ‘indie-pop-goth-post-punk’ sounds like a respectful re-interpretation of 80’s new wave. At this exclusive show in The Netherlands The Exploding Boy will present their ‘The Black Album’ and of course the new single.
TRIARII
Over the past years, Triarii managed not only to stay on top of the crowded martial industrial genre, but to significantly improve it with each release. Bombastic and powerful as always, Erdmann and his allies know how to turn nostalgia for past times into atmospheric and meaningful music. During this exclusive Benelux show at Summer Darkness, Triarii will present its latest offering: the highly anticipated ‘Exile’ EP.
VOMITO NEGRO
Every other country could be jealous of the amount and quality that the Belgian EBM acts have been bringing to the table since the early eighties. Vomito Negro (named after horrible consequences of the yellow fever) has helped keeping the quality to standard since 1983. As a new EP has just been released, we´re guessing it won´t be just rehashing the good old days.
WINTERKALTE
Top of the bill power noise act Winterkälte present new material after a long wait by those that like their industrial harsh. This exclusive Benelux show will prove once again why this is one of the leading acts in rhythmic industrial and noise scenes alike. POST NUCLEAR STEAM-CITY OF ECHOES
This will be Summer Darkness’ second edition of a heart-felt tale of the aftermath of the apocalypse. It is a different universe, where steam and gears took over and our modern day society is nothing but a vague echo. In this fashion (or rather, art-) spectacle based on the underground steampunk-genre, a number of artists and performers show their take on another world.
Allow yourself to dwell on the dreams of a fashion designer who has built this show together with passionate artists such as jewelry designers, dancers, video artists, acrobats and stage designers. The story told will be one of a society confined to one city, surrounded by a deadly wasteland. It is a world sure to thrill your senses and put your own into perspective.
Truth be told, this years edition will be a bigger and better sequel on last year’s Steamshow. Back in 2011 a sold out spiegelbar was the venue for Rosie’s Arts vision of Post Nuclear Steam. This year the City of Echoes will arise in the old Leeuwenbergh Church on the evening tide of Friday and Saturday. Be sure to visit us.

STORM: The Industrial Revolution
Back in 2005, two guys figured it was time for better industrial parties. Loving the atmosphere on cybergoth and noise parties, but also enjoying the energy on tekno and underground hardcore events, they started to combine the best of both worlds: the birth of the industrial crossoverparty STORM. With this concept, many volunteers and extra attention to the party’s lights and decoration, STORM threw no less than 17 parties. Being asked to host a night on Summer Darkness is a recognition for all these years of hard work. Join them in their revolution!

Luke McMillan aka The Dj Producer has been active as a dj since way back in 1989. Not satisfied with playing other peoples’ records, in 1994 luke got the bug to start transmitting his own signal, and ventured into the realms of making music. The rest really IS history. Luke is now in demand globally, and his appetite for “sending a signal” has taken him to many places including Australia, U.S.A., and Canada. Renowned for his energetic style of dj’ing, famous for his mixing skills and loved by all ravers, the DJ Producer is the perfect closing act of your fridaynight at STORM!

Donderdag stond Guitar Wolf uit Japan in dB’s. De drie punk rock’n'rollers gehuld in zwart leer en zonnebrillen gingen te keer als een uitbarstende vulkaan. De Utrechtse Stilettos waren het voorprogramma.
The Stilettos werd midden jaren ’90 opgericht door de broers Armand (zang) en Barry Hofstede (drums). Niet veel later voegt gitarist Henk-Jan Hoekjen zich bij hen. Het drietal mag vanavond openen voor Guitar Wolf. En dat doen ze uitstekend.
In iets meer dan een half uur knallen ze vijftien nummers het publiek in.
Gewoon onvervalste garage rock’n'roll met een punk attitude. In de trend van The Stooges meet early Stones.
Dat gaat gepaard met humor en plezier. The Stilettos gaan al vele jaren te keer als een razende rock’n'roll trein.
Dit drietal ademt gewoon rock’n'roll uit. De heren houden er zelfs stage namen op na.
Achter het drumstel zit Rockstar Barry die een meester is in gekke bekken trekken.
Drs. Hook (Henk-Jan) met leip hoedje en z’n trouwe Telecaster.
En op zang Ned Harris die, voorzien van een nieuwe kruisband, ook regelmatig met tamboerijn en mondorgel in de weer is.
Hij is al vaker een “Mick Jagger meets Iggy Pop” genoemd. Daar valt niks aan toe te voegen. Een geweldige uitstraling net als de andere twee in de band. Deze heren zijn nog steeds verdomd goed. En dat ziet een redelijk goed gevuld dB’s vanavond ook.
Natuurlijk komt het grootste deel van het publiek vanavond voor drie andere heren met een zelfs nog veel grotere rock’n'roll attitude. Guitar Wolf heeft een reputatie van hier tot Tokyo. En dat zullen wij vanavond dubbel en dwars gaan ondervinden.
Guitar Wolf werd in 1987 opgericht door gitarist/zanger Seiji samen met bassist Billy en een drummer. Deze laatste werd in 1991 vervangen door Toru. Het trio toert de hele wereld over en brengt regelmatig materiaal uit.
Tien jaar geleden speelden ze voor het eerst in Nederland.
In 2005 overlijdt bassist Billy onverwacht aan een hartaanval. Een half jaar later komt bassist U.G de band versterken.
De band heeft inmiddels tien albums achter hun naam staan. De laatste “Space Battleship Love” die in 2010 in Japan uitkwam werd vorig jaar ook in Europa uitgebracht.
Dit jaar deden ze eerst Amerika aan met hun Alien Action Tour 2012. In mei en juni is Europa aan de beurt met maar liefst drie optredens in Nederland.
Twee dagen nadat Guitar Wolf optrad in de kleine zaal van Paradiso staat dB’s op het programma. Het zal een gedenkwaardige avond gaan worden.
Precies een half uur nadat The Stilettos hun set hebben beeindigd stapt het drietal het podium op. Eerst zijn daar de Drum Wolf Toru en de Bass Wolf U.G.
Ze zetten gelijk in op een werkelijk oorverdovend volume.
Dan is het tijd voor de onbetwiste leider van de band, Seiji de Guitar Wolf zelf, het podium te betreden.
Eerst wordt er een fles bier gepakt en de in zwart leer gestoken gitarist met pikzwarte zonnebril giet de inhoud in één teug z’n keelgat in.
Het is meteen duidelijk dat we hier niet de zoveelste visual kei band hebben staan die het van de mooie kleurrijke looks en vrouwelijk aandoend uiterlijk moet hebben.
Met een paar flinke roggels onderstreept Seiji dat onmiddellijk.
Wat volgt is een orkaan van vijf kwartier puur garage rock’n'roll geweld.
Ze gaan werkelijk te keer als een straaljager op volle snelheid. Seiji gebruikt in opener “Machine Gun Guitar” z’n gitaar alsof het een mitrailleur is en richt hem op het publiek vooraan. De toon is meteen gezet voor een erg heftig avondje.
Vooraan wordt het een ruige moshpit tot groot plezier van de Japanse gitaarwolf. De Bass Wolf blijkt een drie snarige bass te hanteren. De onderste snaar ontbreekt, net als het stem mechaniek op de kop. Het hindert U.G niet, uit drie dikke snaren weet hij een geweldige pompende dreun te halen.
Toru achter de drumkit slaat zich werkelijk diep in het zweet. Bij hem gaan na enkele nummers het leren jack uit. Op z’n bezweette lijf zijn grote tattoo’s zichtbaar.
De gitaar van Seiji begeeft het met een technisch probleem.
Niet getreurd een roadie zit het hele concert naast hem op het podium in een hoekje. Het lijkt een vast ritueel te zijn.
De roadie kan de gitaar oplappen terwijl Seiji een volgend exemplaar ter hand neemt.
Seiji gaat ook de strijd met publiek op de voorste rij aan en haalt tenslotte iemand op het podium die hij probeert uit te leggen dat springen het belangrijkste is in rock’n'roll.
Maar de toeschouwer kijkt met grote vragende ogen aan wat de Guitar Wolf bedoelt.
Na een poging of twintig krijgt hij het eindelijk door dat tegelijk spelen en springen is waar iedereen op wacht.
Intussen is Seiji ook al twee keer crowdsurfend de zaal door geweest. De zweetdruppels vliegen als projectielen in het rond en het publiek vooraan wordt alleen maar uitzinniger. Met een tomeloze inzet gaat Guitar Wolf richting het eind van de show.
Na iets meer dan een uur is de set afgelopen. De band keert echter al weer vlot terug op het podium en trekt nog een keer alle registers open en het lijkt dat dan eindelijk na 70 minuten de rust terug keert in dB’s als de heren het podium verlaten.
Na deze toegift lijkt het concert ten einde. Publiek stroomt snel de zaal uit richting de bar. Maar dan stapt Seiji weer het podium op. Toru en U.G komen alleen de kleedkamer uit om de solo verrichtingen van hun frontman vanaf de zijkant gade te slaan.
Seiji speelt rammelend en flink afgepeigerd het nummer “I Love You, Okay”. Het publiek stroomt weer langzaam de zaal in maar tegen de tijd dat de meesten weer goed en wel binnen zijn is het feest echt afgelopen.
Guitar Wolf heeft vanavond grote indruk gemaakt in dB’s. De show voelde als een vulkaan die tot uitbarsting kwam met een band die het geluid liet horen van een door de geluidsbarrière gaande Concorde.
Melechesh is een black-metalband rond Melechesh Ashmedi, afkomstig uit Jeruzalem. Tegenwoordig opereert de band vanuit Frankrijk en Nederland.
